Chasing Butter Tarts in Kawarthas Northumberland Region
Is your sweet tooth acting up? This fall, there’s no better place to enjoy butter tarts than in the Kawarthas Northumberland Region. It’s a speciality dessert in this little corner of Ontario, scattered with over 50 places serving this classic Canadian sweet treat. Here, local bakers are winning awards for their recipes and making unique variations, stuffing the shell with delicious ingredients like pumpkin, cream cheese or maple bacon fillings. Plus, butter tart lovers can easily follow four self-guided Butter Tart Tour itineraries across the region.
Start by sinking your teeth into the treats on the To Your Tarts Content Tour. This leisurely drive along the shores of the Trent Severn Waterway explores a dozen or so bakeries, cafés and tart stands, as well as farmers markets, theatres and art galleries scattered along the way. If you have time, stick around for an artsy weekend on the Apsley Autumn Studio Tour from September 17 to 18.
For the ultimate binge, embark on a whirlwind Tart Me Up! tour of the more than 20 “tarteries” around Peterborough and surrounding areas. After sampling a slew of sweet treats, go on a back-roads cycling adventure and wind down at one of the local craft breweries with a pint.
Craving a day outing? The Dash and Dine tour might be more your style. Just off the 401 Highway, try everything from a decadent gluten-free tart at Ste. Anne’s Spa to a tart with a side of art during the Trent Hills Gallery & Studio Hop. Or take a country drive through Northumberland East on the You Had Me at Butter tour. Aside from enjoying stellar scenery and desserts, you can also bike one of the many cycling routes, absorbing vistas of Lake Ontario and Rice Lake along with sumptuous butter tarts.
But don’t forget to mark your calendar for the sweetest event of the year. On Saturday September 24, the annual Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Taste-Off will celebrate the tastiest tarts from the bakeries across the Butter Tart Tour. Aside from filling your belly with free samples, cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award, along with a panel of judges who will award the best in butter tarts. And feel free to also check out local artwork on the Kawartha Autumn Studio Tour!
Had your fill? Take a break and explore the many other fabulous offerings of the Kawarthas Northumberland Region. Go for a beer tasting at one of the many craft breweries, or visit local wineries to taste some unique local blends. On September 10 and 11, get a dose of art and culture on the Northumberland Hills Studio Tour, followed by an evening of live music at the All Canadian Jazz Festival in Port Hope. Wherever you visit in the Kawarthas Northumberland Region this fall, you’re bound to run into sweet treats and fun-filled events.
