A P.A.R.T.Y. to Prevent Risk – Road Safety Education in School.

We can make our roads safer. In 2013, there were more than 180,000 collisions, resulting in over 59,000 injuries and over 500 fatalities in Ontario alone.

The top reasons why collisions happen are impairment, distracted driving, not wearing seat-belts or proper restraints, and disobeying road rules. These are all preventable. CAA and friends, like Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, are working on easy ways to provide access to road safety education.

The Ontario Road Safety Resource has curriculum based lesson plans, as well as community engagement kits that encourage connecting with community partners to supplement in-class learning. Sarah Gallsworthy from Sunnybrook Health Science Centre’s P.A.R.T.Y. program will tell you about one way you can connect with a community partner to bring road safety education to teens.

Intentional and unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for people as young as one to 44-years-old and Sunnybrook Health Science Centre’s P.A.R.T.Y. Program is trying to change that.

On Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the school year, students from Grade 10 to 12 take part in the P.A.R.T.Y. Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. P.A.R.T.Y. stands for Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth. Teens learn about the biggest risks to their lives and how they can prevent those risks from having catastrophic impacts. The program brings youth to and through trauma centres providing a real and intimate look at the consequences to the choices they may make.

Students who’ve attended P.A.R.T.Y. said it’s an ‘eye opening experience that really forces you to take a closer look at the decisions you are making in your life.’ Plus one student said, “P.A.R.T.Y. helped my friends and I really appreciate what we have and want to protect it.”

This P.A.R.T.Y. is about prevention, awareness, and learning from the vivid, emotional and very real stories of the people that have lived through the experiences.  At this P.A.R.T.Y. teens see first-hand what happens when young people make a decision that changes their life forever.  Students who participate in the P.A.R.T.Y. Program leave making better and safer choices.  #livelifelarge
